The building contractor RJ McKelvey Ltd successfully fought off competition to win the contract to complete the work at Belfast International Airport’s 1.6 acre site.
RJ McKelvey Ltd beat several other firms to win the contract to carry out the work which is expected to stretch over 7 months, while creating around 35 jobs both fulltime and part time, creating £500,000 in wages.
Robert McKelvey from RJ McKelvey Ltd said: "We’re delighted to have won this important contract. This is a home-grown company awarding a contract to another local firm, and that means it’s a win-win for the local economy.”
Plans for the extended work to the airport include bringing “high street” names all together in one place within the airport, while also introducing well known restaurant companies to the retail experience.
Canice Mallaghan of Moorefield Contracts said: "We’re pleased that the work is going to be carried out by a local firm that has earned an enviable reputation over its 31 years in operation.
Belfast International Airport saw 4.3 million passengers pass through its doors in 2015, with busiest domestic and international routes featuring Palma & Malaga in Spain, as well as Liverpool and London Gatwick.
Brian Carlin from Belfast International Airport said: "We will have a record-breaking 2017, and that means higher demand for what will be on offer at this new, much-needed facility."
